Haussamen.com is primarily an opinion website (and an accompanying newsletter) published by the New Mexico corporation Haussamen, LLC and operated by me, Heath Haussamen. I aim for accuracy and integrity so you can trust what I publish. I aim for transparency so you can decide for yourself how to weigh my work.
Clarifications, corrections and retractions
Haussamen.com will never knowingly publish material that is inaccurate. I will correct mistakes when I become aware of them.
If I need to clarify or correct an article, I’ll make the change and add a note at the end explaining the change. Should a retraction be necessary, I will consider whether to remove an article entirely or add a note at the beginning of the article announcing the retraction and explaining the reason.
To report an error, send me an email.
No plagiarizing
Haussamen.com will avoid plagiarism and respect the copyrights on people’s work. When we quote others’ work, we will cite the source and, if possible, link to it.
Unnamed sources
Credibility comes from quoting named sources and documents. Haussamen.com will lean on such sources when possible, which is almost always. In rare circumstances, given the sensitive nature of politics and other factors, there’s no way to report on what is happening without unnamed sources. I may occasionally quote unnamed sources in two ways:
- If I’ve spoken with a number of people to get a sense of what’s going on, I may report the feelings or thoughts of a group without naming names.
- If there is a critical piece of information I can’t obtain except through quoting an unnamed source, I will do so, but only after exhausting other methods of attempting to get the information. I will only quote people I trust as unnamed sources. If I am not certain the information is accurate, I will hold off until I can verify it with at least one other source.
Disclosures
As a journalist I have devoted much of my career to combating government secrecy. I believe journalists should be transparent about relationships that may affect or create the appearance of affecting their work. In that spirit, I need to disclose here that my girlfriend, Sarah Silva, is an elected Democrat who represents District 53 in the N.M. House of Representatives. I’m a huge supporter of Sarah and her work. Because this is a commentary website, I won’t necessarily avoid writing about issues that could come up before the Legislature or that Sarah is working on, but I will disclose that relationship in every article where it’s relevant.
How will this impact my writing? I think you’ll see over time that I’m still a critic of much the Democratic Party does. You’ll still see me work to treat all people fairly. I won’t write propaganda. There may be times where I choose to say nothing, but when I publish something, I will be sharing my genuine beliefs.
I’ve spent my career forming and sharing strong opinions while also writing in a way that is nuanced and fair. I will be open and genuine with you. I trust you to judge my writing for yourself and form your own opinions.
Financial contributor policy
I believe journalists should be transparent about the money that funds their work. Haussamen.com is funded by donations. I will disclose the names of donors along with the amounts of their contributions and, when possible, their city and state.
Haussamen.com keeps other information about contributors, such as contact information, confidential. Many people make contributions through PayPal, and I have no access to credit card or other payment information. Read Haussamen.com’s privacy policy and PayPal’s privacy policy for more information.
Financial contributions are not tax deductible. By donating you agree to be added to our email list, but you’re welcome to opt out by using the link in emails or contacting us.
